Martin Davies was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1960.

He holds doctorates in Philosophy from the University of Adelaide (2002) and Flinders University (1994) and teaching qualifications from Cambridge University. He won the H. J. Allen Prize in Philosophy from the University of Adelaide in 2002.

He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Higher Education in the Teaching and Learning Unit, Faculty of Economics and Commerce at the University of Melbourne, and an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Economics. Martin is the author of two other philosophy books: Experience and Content: Consequences of a Continuum Theory (Ashgate, 1996) and The Philosophy of Sir William Mitchell (1861-1962): A Mind’s Own Place (Edwin Mellen Press, 2002) as well as articles in journals as diverse as Behavioral and Brain Sciences, the Australasian Journal of Philosophy, and Australian Economic Papers.

His current research interests overlap areas in Education and Philosophy, especially issues associated with the teaching of critical thinking, reasoning and argument, and intercultural differences in inference patterns. He is currently doing work on systemic biases in the use of teaching evaluation instruments with a team of educators and econometricians.

Martin in married to a Malaysian citizen, Alice, has one son, and lives in Melbourne
